Rolling hills, vineyards, apple orchards, single track, sunshine… and all just an hour from Cape Town. The Elgin Valley is swiftly making its way to the top of every adventure destination list out there, and we love being in on the action. Read on to find out what to look forward to. Better yet, chat to one of the Luxury Safaris team members to book a weekend away, or incorporate it in to one of our tailored tours around South Africa.
Cape Canopy Tour
Any takers for a zipline canopy tour in the company of soaring eagles, surrounded by Cape fynbos and breathtaking mountains? This is one of the most popular adventure activities for the whole family, and has yet to disappoint a single Luxury Safaris client.
And we’re not the only ones writing rave reviews – recently listed Cape Canopy Tour as second on the list of the world’s hottest new tourism experiences for 2015. It was the only African attraction to make the list!
The Hickory Shack
If you’re after a traditional Texas- style BBQ then this smokehouse should be high on your list. Think wood-fires, blue smoke, local woods and organic chips. All their meats are carefully selected for the heritage, texture and taste they bring; dry rubbed; slow cooked; and lightly basted right at the very end.
We can highly recommend both the beef short rib and pulled pork, accompanied by an assortment of side dishes tailored to each dish – from homemade beans and slaw to golden fries. Be sure to taste the craft beer they have on offer too – it’s all part of the adventure!
Paul Cluver Wines is a family owned and run winery, with a gorgeous restaurant and beautiful mountain bike trails. Some of the route is quite technical, with single track, hectic climbs and bridges built on a massive tree trunks and from wine barrel slats… but there is also plenty of time to enjoy the picturesque scenery and catch your breath.
We often team up with Elgin Adventures to take our clients on a guided mountain biking excursion from Elgin to Hermanus, via Botriver. There is a bit of technical riding here too, so some experience and a decent level of fitness is certainly recommended; however, there are a few sneaky shortcuts if you’re more interested in the views than the cycling!
In true Luxury Safaris style, this tour is all about balance – so look forward to gourmet food and wine experiences along the way. Highlights include a delicious three-course meal at Forage restaurant (after which you can roll down to your luxury accommodation with breathtaking views) and riding through the exquisite Hemel & Aarde (Heaven & Earth) Valley, where you have a range of top-end restaurants and wine farms to choose from.
It really does have something for anyone looking for a bit of luxury and adventure rolled into one – in true African style. Let us know what other gems you’ve discovered in the Elgin Valley and we’ll add them to our list.
