Ivory Lodge at Lion Sands, with the Treehouse extension option. It’s guaranteed to get you out of trouble with the missus, or close the deal if she’s not your missus yet. Look forward to amazing wildlife viewings on your doorstep, exquisite food and unbelievable service. There is total privacy too, and I do have a predilection for running around in my birthday suit, although that’s not for everyone.
Bring your a-game experience:
This depends on your fear of choice. White Shark Cage Diving will scare the daylights out of most people; if heights gets your blood pumping then the Cape Canopy Tour is just for you. For our claustrophobic clients, the adventure extension to the Cango Caves tour is hectic. For me? The Bloukrans bungee still comes out on top as the scariest of the lot. It’s 216m down, this just isn’t natural. You’ll never forget it, but I’m not sure I want to do it again in a hurry.
My diet starts on Monday indulgence:
In Cape Town, La Colombe and Pot Luck Club are my favourites. La Colombe is just pure class and I’ve had amazing food every time I’ve visited. Pot Luck Club has a tapas vibe and the setting is extremely sexy. Cape Town is a culinary hotspot for good reason. We do eat well here… If I had to choose though, I’d probably ditch the fancy restaurants and have my mom serve up her legendary oxtail stew. Can’t beat it…
My culture moment:
I like to take guests to a rugby game when it’s on. This combines beautifully with the “braai” – a barbeque in true South African style. This is a great opportunity to catch up with good friends, make new ones and sizzle some meat. It’s part of our overriding “welcome to my life” philosophy – where we want to truly engage with our clients and share a piece of our lifestyle.
Barman pour me another:
Craft beer has taken off in Cape Town, along with all the hipsters and then some. The Devils Peak Brewery has great triple, and combined with their pulled pork sandwich at half-price on Mondays, this is a great place to solve the world’s problems. When I class it up, I head out to the winelands and my favourite summer spot is the terrace at Ernie Els vineyards. Here you can have some cheese, taste their Bordeaux style blends and enjoy the amazing views of the Stellenbosch valley. Top stuff.
I like to sweat on holiday:
Cycling through Paul Cluver as part of your Elgin Adventure will get your blood racing and burn a few calories at the same time. Reward yourself for not losing your balance on some of the tight switchbacks with a craft beer at the Hickory Shack (or a cappuccino if you have strong principles on drinking before 12). My regular weekend show is taking my black Labrador up Table Mountain for a hike – the pup aces the Platteklip Gorge Hike in just over an hour. Views from the top? Nothing beats it.
