Launching in August 2017, PG TOPS and Luxury Safaris is excited to launch T.B.C. – Tourism Boot Camp!
The PG TOPS group has identified a total mismatch between growing industry (tourism) needs and available skillsets – which is ridiculous in a country with 50% youth unemployment. We will aim to bridge the skills gap for unemployed youth in order to facilitate their entry into the industry.
HOW WILL WE DO IT?
We will leverage the consultant and training resources within PG TOPS and Luxury Safaris. The format will be six weeks of course work followed by two weeks of practical mentorship. Thereafter, we will place interns who pass the rigorous weekly tests in a suitable industry placement.
The course will have the following key components:
WEEK 1: PRODUCT TRAINING (CAPE TOWN TOURS)
WEEK 2: ACTIVITIES TRAINING
WEEK 3: EDUCATIONALS AND ITINERARY BUILDING
WEEK 4: TECHNICAL SKILLS (EXCEL AND OFFICE APPLICATIONS)
WEEK 5: PRESENTATION (PHYSICAL, ORAL, WRITTEN)
WEEK 6: PRACTICAL RESERVATIONS AND QUOTE SHADOWING
WEEK 7&8: IN-OFFICE MENTORSHIP
WHAT IS THE COST?
That’s the beauty of it. We will PAY interns to come study – an initial stipend of R1000 per week during the two week internship, with an intended entry level salary of R8000 per month once suitably placed at internship completion. This will be initially funded as the PG TOPS groups corporate social responsibility, but we are aiming to ramp up to donor funding and industry participation as soon as we have fine tuned the curriculum and outcomes.
HOW MANY INTERNS CAN WE TAKE?
Initial intake budgeted for is 4 interns in August 2017. We will aim to run a second program in October, with the same number of interns. The classroom is being constructed at PG TOPS HQ and we are all excited to be part of the solution!
