Finding the balance

When last did you say, ‘I’ve got the balance right’? Juggling work, play, family, friends and the odd hour to yourself is no simple task, and often you need to take a step back and have a proper break to reset the clock.

Combining a luxury safari holiday with a bit of adventure and some time to unwind and relax is what we’d call the ultimate trip to Africa. Affordable luxury in Cape Town and along the picturesque Garden Route is hard to beat… so set aside two weeks to travel with us and experience a few of our favourite spots in sunny South Africa.

The first three days of your trip will be spent exploring Cape Town – from a hike up Table Mountain or around Cape Point, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, to adrenaline activities such as shark cage diving or paragliding off Lion’s Head. Pair that with some fine dining and a leisurely spa day at Birkenhead House, the Twelve Apostles or the Vineyard Hotel, and you’ll want to stay for another week!

But let’s unpack that paragraph a bit for those of you that aren’t familiar with the Mother City, as Cape Town is affectionately referred to by locals. Table Mountain is one of the oldest mountains on the planet, as well as one of the seven wonders of nature (read our 20 fascinating facts about South Africa blog post if you’d like to learn other interesting tidbits about the country), and forms a breath-taking backdrop to the city. With pristine beaches scattered around the coastline, adventure at every turn, and some of the world’s best spots to wine, dine and be pampered, it really is the most incredible city. It’s vibrant, friendly and full of life – so be prepared to be swept up in it all and book your next trip before you even set off for part two of the adventure!

Next up is five days along the Garden Route where you can explore the world’s longest underground cave sequence at Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn; leap off Bloukrans Bridge to experience the highest commercial bungy jump in the world, at an impressive 216 metres; kayak in Wilderness and zipline along the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour. Last, but certainly not least, you get to spend three days at Shamwari Game Reserve in the beautiful Eastern Cape. Each of their 5-star luxury lodges has its own unique style, designed in harmony with the natural surroundings. There are two games drives per day, where you can spot the big 5 from the comfort and safety of an open game vehicle, accompanied by a knowledgeable qualified guide. You can also take part in a nature conservation experience, and sign up for relaxing spa treatments amidst the sights, sounds and scents of the African bush.
